En cons\u00e9quence, ces deux merveilles c\u00e9lestes facilement visibles pour les observateurs du ciel de l\u2019h\u00e9misph\u00e8re sud sont connues sous le nom de Nuages de Magellan, m\u00eame si elles auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 mentionn\u00e9es pour la premi\u00e8re fois par Amerigo Vespucci. Les civilisations de l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re sud les connaissaient s\u00fbrement depuis bien plus longtemps.<br>Ces nuages cosmiques sont en fait des galaxies naines irr\u00e9guli\u00e8res, anciennes galaxies spirales barr\u00e9es d\u00e9form\u00e9es par les forces de mar\u00e9e de la Voie Lact\u00e9e. Le Petit Nuage de Magellan, situ\u00e9 dans la constellation australe du Toucan, est un membre du groupe local et se situe \u00e0 200 000 ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re de nous.
